In Isaan, north-east Thailand, the local girls have long since ceased to rely solely on the rice-crop to feed their families. Much more money can be made out of the sex tourists who flock to Bangkok or Pattaya to sample Thailand’s famously beautiful and accommodating women. Told entirely from the women’s point of view, this film explores the multiple ways that a nice Isaan girl can make a living from a foreigner. In the village of Konkaen, a foreign husband and a posh western house has become a dream for many local girls. The fastest method is to go Bangkok to work as a bar-girl, the euphemism for prostitute. Many bar-girls come back to the village triumphant, foreign husband in tow. The film moves between sleepy Isaan, where letter-writer Ponpilai plays cupid by writing emails for the girls who’ve met a foreign man but can’t communicate with him; and the frenetic world of the red light district in Bangkok, where Mamasan Jip runs a lucrative ‘ladydrink’ brothel bar in Bangkok, and promises her girls not only a good salary, but the best possible chance to meet a foreign husband. It’s worked for Fon, a savvy bar-girl who now has a Birmingham builder as a boyfriend. But Lek, a single mum used only to village life, is not sure that she’s got what it takes to survive at Mamasan Jip’s bar.

In the late 19th century, Toronto city police Detective William Murdoch investigates the murder of a young girl found drugged and strangled in an alley in the red light district. The autopsy reveals the girl was pregnant but Murdoch doubts she was a doxie. Murdoch faces the challenge of investigating prominent members of Toronto society when she is identified as Therese Laporte, a chambermaid working for a wealthy family. When a possible witness to the murder is also killed, Murdoch learns that Therese was seen voluntarily getting into a carriage, as if she knew the occupant. With another witness in danger, Murdoch must stop the killer before he strikes again.

Thai prostitutes desperate to find Western husbands spend half their income on interpreters, it has been revealed. Film crews followed Fon, a bar worker, and Yek, a karaoke singer, on their plight to find foreign men to whisk them away from a life of poverty and provide for their children. For foreign men searching for petite Thai wives the Nana Plaza red light district of Bangkok is full of Eastern promise, but for the women who work there life couldnt be less glamorous. By night Fon, a 21-year-old single mum, sells her body to tourists but by day she hands her wages over to a cunning businesswoman. Pompeli, one of the only women in the area with a computer and good grasp of English, charges the girls to send and reply to e-mails from potential husbands. Like Fon, karaoke singer Lek, 32, is desperate to find a foreign husband to provide for her and her two young children. She has been posting photographs of herself on the Internet in the hope of finding a foreign love, but is having little success. The girls were filmed for Channel 4 show Girlfriend for Sale. On air december 2007.
