As Brian (johntv.com) has well said – Street Prostitution is not a victimless crime. The victims are the prostitutes, the johns’ families, residents, women working in affected areas. In Singapore, Geylang is always viewed as red-light district where in reality there are much more interesting places one can find including popular local restaurants, Muslim schools, mosques, Buddhist temples, clans, trade associations and architectural conservation buildings for locals, families and tourists to visit. Besides, there are affordable accommodation for tourists for the many budget hotels as well as housing with more than 50 residential apartment blocks. In each of the 44 numbers of lorongs ( ie side streets or lanes ), one can find interesting places to visit or view. Beside this, the main Geylang Road is convenient located near to Geylang Serai Market, Joo Chiat area as well as future Paya Lebar second offices and commercial area. It takes about 10 to 20 minutes to walk to these places. Prostitution is legalised in Singapore ( where you can find some brothels in a few designated even-numbered lorongs in Geylang ); however, street prostitution soliciting are illegal. In recent years, the increase of street walkers had resulted in more security and environment problems as crimes are attracted alongside such activities including robberies, thefts and even a case of murder linked to a foreign prostitute. There are children (schools) as well as worshippers (temples, mosques) who …

By correctly I mean legalize and regulate it throughout the U.S. It would make things a lot safer and a lot more clean. It really isn’t that hard to setup brothels and red light districts. Allow the girls to register as sex workers which requires them to receive regular STD tests. Give them a scan card that they swipe whenever they check in for work and it will say whether they have had their most recent medical checkups. Many developed countries already do this! If they can regulate the porn industry they definitely can regulate prostitution.

It would get many girls off the street and away from abusive pimps. I know not all of them but a lot of them. It would allow law enforcement to focus on the real criminals and it would help our economy.

I know many of you think prostitution is degrading and morally wrong but come on! Who are you to judge what two consenting adults do with their bodies behind closed doors? Prostitutes are no worse than the millions of women who go out to bars, get drunk, and sleep with some random guy whose name they can’t even remember. I say legalize it!

Japanese men are the root cause of the problem. I heard that the government perpetuates sexual content to the public to keep their minds off of violence (my friends japanese). If the wives or girlfriends can keep their man happy, wouldn’t that stop the problem. Their was a big incedent last year when japanese men went to china and hired a hundred prostitutes for a party and the chinese govt went ballistic.

*Perilous Times and Decaying Morality
40,000 women ’sex trafficked’ for World Cup*
German government supports import of mostly poor from Central, Eastern
Europe

Posted: May 26, 2006
In response to reports that 40,000 young women will be brought to
Germany from Central and Eastern Europe to “sexually service” men
attending the World Cup soccer championship next month, a Catholic group
warns that many are desperately poor and will be “sex trafficked”
against their will.

An estimated 3 million soccer fans – mostly men – are expected to
descend on 12 German cities for the quadrennial sports event June 9 to
July 9. Prostitution is legal in Germany.

Most of the women are told “they are going to be models, waitresses or
some other harmless occupation,” says C-FAM. “Many will be brutally
assaulted by intoxicated fans.”

The group comments: “Whatever their circumstances, each and every one of
these young women is someone’s daughter, a child of God and deserves our
protection! They do not deserve to be exploited and sentenced to a life
of misery to satisfy the sexual appetites of soccer fans.”

What “makes this crime particularly appalling,” adds C-FAM, “is the open
support it is receiving from the German government. The same government
that likes to lecture America on morality!”

The group is far from alone in its condemnation of the mass prostitution
campaign. Before German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to the White
House earlier this Month, U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, R.-N.J., said: “It is
an outrage that the German government is currently facilitating
prostitution and we believe women who will be exploited will be treated
as commodities.”

According to the Christian Science Monitor, Brunhilde Raiser, director
of the National Council of German Womens’ Organizations, said: “Forced
prostitution has yet to become a public issue of concern as a severe
violation of human and women’s rights. Our goal is to bring it as far up
the political agenda as possible.”

Even Sweden’s “equality ombudsman,” Claes Borgström, has reportedly
called for a boycott of the World Cup by the Swedish team to highlight
the problem.

Because the German red light districts are too small to accommodate the
soccer fans, the country’s sex industry has built a massive prostitution
complex, including a “mega-brothel” in Berlin, next to the main World
Cup venue, that can accommodate 650 male clients.

Wooden “sex huts” or “performance boxes” have been built in fenced-in
areas the size of a football field, with condoms, showers and parking
and a special focus on protecting the customers’ anonymity.

Some sources estimate that as many as 30 percent of the soccer fans will
visit prostitutes at least once.

The group is collecting names on a petition to be delivered to the
German missions to the U.N. and European Parliament, German Embassy in
the U.S., members of the German Parliament and the governing body of the
World Cup.

In December, the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly passed a bill that
strengthens the nation’s current human trafficking law and authorizes
new funds for investigation and prosecution of domestic trafficking
within the United States.

Each year, an estimated 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across
international borders, and millions more are trafficked internally.
Worldwide, more than 3,000 traffickers were convicted last year.

A report issued in 2004 estimated 10,000 people in the United States are
being forced to work against their will under threat of violence.
Researchers found that almost half of forced laborers are in
prostitution or the sex industry, close to a third are domestic workers,
and one in 10 works in agriculture.

They have red light districts and they have prostitutes who wait in cars along streetsides and it’s perfectly legal it’s a legal business. The rape cases are very low because of legalized prostitution also. I think the United States should do the same thing. I think they’re concerned about low marriage rates if prostitution gets legalized in our country. That’s o.k. though the rape cases would drop almost down to zero and the sexually transmitted diseases would drop significantly too. Over there the prostitutes always use condomns even when performing oral sex. I think it would be a good thing. I’d get a petition for a bill to be passed on it. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I’d like to hear some differing views on this topic. Not to stereotype, but I’m sure that some on the right feel it is immoral and some on the left feel that it is degrading to women. Are these good enough reasons for it to be illegal?

On one hand:
1) It is a victimless crime
2) If legalized, it could be regulated and made safer for men and women.
3) Practitioners could be forced to get regular AIDS tests to keep a license
4) It could be an extra tax revenue stream for the Government
5) As in Holland, it could be limited to red light districts in each city
6) It could cut down on illegal human trafficking of women from other countries because each woman would be in a registry.

I’m curious to see your viewpoints.
7) What a woman does with her body is her private business, right (same argument as abortion)
ikem- Okay, but if we based our laws on bible principles, many things would be illegal, right? In that case, it would be illegal to have an abortion, be gay, gamble, etc.
“Prostitution is legal in Nevada and they have some of the lowest STD rates in the nation. It’s when you force prostitution into back alleys with no regulation that people spread STDs.” -from another post
